American Street Mortgage Hosts 2nd Annual Streetball Classic Charity Basketball Tournament to Benefit United Way

American Street Mortgage is doing more than financing homes in Chicagoland.  It is ensuring that people are able to remain in their homes despite the unstable economic climate.  The mortgage company is raising money for a United Way special initiative to help families in crisis through the American Street Mortgage Streetball Classic Charity Basketball Tournament.

The tournament takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 25 at the Moody Bible Institute’s Solheim Center, the former NBA Pre-Draft/Dream Team Facility. Teams of three are encouraged to register online at www.americanstreetball.org  no later than July 17.

The tournament features teams competing in 3-on-3 basketball, slam dunk and 3-point shot contests. All proceeds will benefit United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, the non-government leader of the health and human services sector, focused on moving people beyond crisis to independence.

“We commend American Street Mortgage for creating an opportunity for young leaders in our community to help others,” said Laura Thrall, United Way president and CEO.   “We welcome the chance to engage these young leaders with United Way’s efforts to help people with basic needs; food, shelter, homeless prevention, assistance for seniors and other pressing concerns.”

The tournament organizers hope to raise $10,000 from team sign-ups, sponsorships and the sale of $2 spectator tickets at the door.  All the money raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar by The Chicago Community Trust, doubling the value of each person’s gift.

“We want this charity basketball event to provide resources to our community that will have a real impact, particularly when so many people are feeling the affects of the economy,” said Sharbel Shamoon, vice president of operations, American Street Mortgage. “We selected United Way because they know what it takes for people to become independent and can most effectively put those resources to work.”

The event will be emceed by Candie Gomez, DJ for KISS-FM radio and will feature a silent auction and a special appearance by Chicago Bulls forward Linton Johnson III.  The slam dunk contest will be judged by retired Bears player Jerry Azumah who is now a studio analyst and Bears expert for Comcast SportsNet.
