A taste of YLS at Oktoberfest

DSC_6363-2 (2)On October 21, YLS hosted the first annual OktoberYLSfest at Rhapsody’s gorgeous private party room and patio. The sold out event brought together 100 guests who enjoyed seasonal beer tastings provided by Goose Island along with appetizers and drinks, compliments of Rhapsody. Most importantly, attendees embraced the opportunity to catch-up with old friends and colleagues while making new connections thanks to the strong network of YLS.

To kick-off the event, YLS Communications Committee Chair and Advertising Sales Manager at the Chicago Tribune, Kelly O’Brien welcomed everyone and expressed the common theme of appreciation to all for attending. Special thanks also went to event coordinators including the YLS Communications Committee, Goose Island, Rhapsody, and Blue Plate. They also reaffirmed that the generous donations made for the event all go back to furthering the good work of United Way and the hundreds of programs that United Way supports.

With United Way campaign season kicking off in high gear, both new and existing members of YLS expressed enthusiasm toward getting involved and making a difference. Guests were encouraged to get involved with the fun activities and events within their own company campaigns. The event raised over $1,500 between tickets sales and raffle entries over the course of the evening. For a donation of only $1 per ticket, three lucky guests won exceptional raffle prizes: the newest 8GB iPod Nano engraved with “I LIVE UNITED”, a $50 gift card to Lettuce Entertain You restaurants and a $50 gift card to Millennium Park Grille.

In addition to mingling and networking with peers, the event afforded the chance for young professionals seeking a social and philanthropic organization to gain more insight into YLS and its mission. Newcomer Brion Doherty summarized his experience stating, “The UW event at Rhapsody was a terrific time; I met some great new people and learned a lot about the organization and its goals.” Brion’s sentiment was shared by many, including Max Lintereur who said, “YLS offered a great opportunity to network with young, energetic professionals from a wide variety of industries in a casual atmosphere all for a great cause. The Oktoberfest theme was a great touch.”

The resounding feedback is that a good time was enjoyed by all. Looking ahead to future YLS events, many guests expressed their excitement about the upcoming YLS holiday party, which much like the 2009 OktoberYLSFest, is sure to be a fun-filled success!
