My involvement with United Way started with participation in the annual Spirit of Giving campaigns at work, and one of the KPMG partners introduced me to the Young Leaders Society early this summer. When I researched YLS online, I realized that there was an opportunity to give back through United Way in a more meaningful way than just a financial donation from each paycheck. YLS is a group that blends volunteerism, awareness and fundraising with the added benefit of networking with like-minded peers. I have had the opportunity to attend four of the recent events and have enjoyed each one. With only one event each month, it’s easy to find the time to participate.
My favorite experience with YLS was the volunteer event at BUILD, Inc. As a group we were able to donate 180 hours to clean, organize, and paint the space in Wicker Park. The work will allow BUILD’s staff to better focus their efforts on engaging the youth in the community. Hearing the stories of the BUILD staff who were giving back to the group that helped change their lives was inspiring. And seeing the difference we were able to make in a few short hours on one Saturday afternoon made the experience very rewarding.
I LIVE UNITED by encouraging my co-workers, client contacts and family members to get involved with United Way through YLS. While I can accomplish great things with my time, the impact is amplified greatly when joined by my network.
