United Way Recognizes Region’s Most Generous Leaders

United Way of Metropolitan Chicago today announced the 2009 Top 25 Corporate Citizens of Metropolitan Chicago at its annual Community Celebration at the Chicago Hilton. Topping the list for the third year in a row as the region’s #1 corporate citizen was Northern Trust, which contributed almost $3 million to United Way through corporate and employee donations. Illinois Tool Works was also honored with the United Way Community Spirit Pillar Award for its outstanding work in strengthening communities through corporate giving, employee giving and company-wide volunteerism.

“Northern Trust, Illinois Tool Works and all our top corporate citizens have led truly stellar campaigns during a challenging year,” said Ray McCaskey, United Way 2008 campaign chair. “Their generous employees understand what it means to LIVE UNITED by caring about others and doing something to help.  Without their support, we would not be able to invest in the community so that people can move from crisis to independence. Their commitment to building a stronger region is truly commendable.”

Completing the top five United Way Corporate Citizens of Metropolitan Chicago are (2) UPS, (3) AT&T, Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Works and BEW & Communications Workers of America, (4) Illinois Tool Works Inc. and (5) Bank of America.

At the Celebration, United Way announced it is investing $43 million into health and human service programs throughout the 238 communities it serves. United Way continues to be the largest non-governmental funder of health and human services in the region. This year’s community investment will be distributed to more than 600 programs that provide people with the resources they need to become independent.

“United Way is the place where everyone who cares about other people can go to do something to help,” said Laura Thrall, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago president and CEO. “By donating their time and money, our Top Corporate Citizens find solutions to the most critical issues people face, and fund a network of programs that together can best address those needs.”

The United Way Community Celebration annually honors all those in metropolitan Chicago who chose to LIVE UNITED by giving, advocating and volunteering through United Way.
