For the 2008 tax year, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago will continue to partner with Ladder Up (formerly known as the Tax Assistance Program or “TAP”) and other community-based organizations to assist lower-income families prepare their taxes. Ladder Up, a local non-profit, links its 1,800 TAP volunteers to hardw
orking families to provide free electronic tax return preparation and filing, thereby helping families avoid the high fees and costly refund anticipation loans commonly offered by commercial preparers. TAP volunteers help eligible families claim important tax credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit, as well as refunds from overpayments. However, outreach to underserved communities is needed, as many lower-income families remain unaware of these tax credits.
You can LIVE UNITED and help by printing and posting the 2009 TAP flyer to help participants find the most convenient location. The flyer can be found on the UWMC website Agency Relations page here.
