How I LIVE UNITED

United Way Day of Action

On June 21st, the longest day of the year, United Way of the DuPage Area will join United Ways across the country in the second annual United Way Day of Action. This event serves as a call-to-action for individuals to come together in collective efforts to make needed changes in their communities. With more daylight hours than any other day of the year, June 21 is the perfect day to let your actions speak louder than words. It’s the perfect way to show, by example, what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Why Join the LIVE UNITED Movement?

Because UNITED, we stand. UNITED, we elevate. UNITED, we can change what we see in our world.

LIVE UNITED. It’s a credo. A mission. A goal. Join Hands. Open Your Heart. Lend Your Muscle. Find your Voice. Give 10%. Give 100%. Give 110%. Give an hour. Give a Saturday. Think of we before me. Reach out a hand to one and influence the condition of all.

There are three key components to LIVING UNITED. When you GIVE, ADVOCATE and VOLUNTEER, you can make a true difference in your community.

How do people in our community LIVE UNITED?

My name is Deborah Mate, and I am the IT Social Responsibility Lead at Kellogg Company in Oak Brook. At Kellogg, we have a long heritage of investing in the communities where we live and work. We are so proud to be the top corporate citizen of United Way of the DuPage Area! Empowering my colleagues to give toiletry items to Dupage PADs (Public Action to Deliver Shelter), to our Annual Painting Event with Ray Graham, to volunteering in the DuPage area is how I LIVE UNITED.

My name is Cynthia Johnson. I work at College of DuPage, where my focus is on community development. Joining the United Way board and giving at the Leadership level are natural extensions of my work and life’s passion — providing resources to improve people’s lives. It’s not all about money, though. Serving on the Volunteer Outreach & Development committee, help recruit others who want to make a difference through United Way, too. We’re a board that rolls up our sleeves — like when we distribute food at a local food pantry. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.

We are Dick & Ellie Goers. Picking up after our grandkids have visited always causes us to reflect on what a blessing they are. United Way’s great work with kids and families is one reason we support it in a major way, and we are proud of our long-standing relationship with the organization. Giving what we can to help those in need right here in our community is how we LIVE UNITED.

My name is Amy Webber. I’m the Executive Director at the Community Career Center in Naperville, and we are so pleased to be a United Way of the DuPage Area partner agency. I give back by helping people in the greater Naperville area find jobs by offering assistance with networking, resume writing, job counseling, interviewing, and computer skills. I also give back to the community by educating the job seeker on how to maintain financial stability during times of unemployment. Helping my fellow community members find financial stability in these uncertain times is how I LIVE UNITED.

Hi, my name is Joan Rickard. I serve on the Community Impact Steering Committee of the United Way of DuPage Area. Over the past several years, I have participated in UWDA’s allocations processes. As all social service providers know, every dollar counts. Helping United Way to strategically and effectively invest resources to achieve the greatest community impact is how I LIVE UNITED.
