Current Volunteer Opportunities

Position Title: Board of Directors*
Time Commitment: (3 year)
Description: Together with other board members, fulfill the mission and purpose of the United Way by completing the duties outlined: Make commitment to United Way, its mission and Board decisions; participate in Board meetings (6 per year) and committee work (as determined by specific committees); support fundraising efforts in actions and funds; represent the United Way to its many publics; keep informed of issues effecting United Way; understand and accept the legal and fiduciary responsibilities that come with board membership; determine the goal and objectives of local United Way; act as Trustees of the local United Way on behalf of its donors by reviewing and approving the annual budget of the organization; approve allocations to partner agency programs as aligned through Community Impact Issue areas; be proactive and provide leadership in convening community resources, organizations and agencies to address local issues; live and/or work within Northwest Suburban United Way Service Area (29 communities).

Position Title: LIVE UNITED Committee
Time Commitment: (1 Year)
Description: Steering Committee member will help choose and oversee LIVE UNITED Community programs (ex: Volunteer of the Month, Food Drive, etc…).  Committee selects monthly winner of Live United Volunteer of the Month, assists with Celebration Luncheon, recruits subcommittee for LIVE UNITED projects and assists Development Team with Community Relations and PR.

Position Title: Campaign Committee Member
Time Commitment: August – March
Description: Desire and willingness to actively solicit funds for NWSUW, as well as a commitment to United Way’s mission and purpose. Cooperate/coordinate with NWSUW regional campaign group volunteers, staff and loaned executives; help cultivate existing accounts and prospect new accounts within the Northwest Suburban United Way service area; assist with CEO calls; assist in formulating strategies for all donor segments; help create residential appeal letters; identify award winners for Celebration Luncheon; deliver tokens of appreciate at end of campaign.

Position Title: Gattas Golf Committee
Time Commitment: November – May
Description: Help make the annual event, held in memory of longtime Mount Prospect resident George Gattas, a golfing extravaganza. Volunteers determine format, games, special giveaways, signage for the event and, last but not least, food for banquet.

Position Title: Day at the Races Committee
Time Commitment: April – August
Description: The Day at the Races Committee is charged with soliciting for silent auction items, ensuring sufficient volunteers are present to work the event, and all other items required to put on the event. The committee has the following volunteer opportunities: Sponsorship – responsible for soliciting prizes for raffle and silent auction, as well as table sponsors (or event sponsor, as needed.); Ticket Sales – responsible for table sales, as well as individual ticket sales for the event

Position Title: Day at the Races Volunteer (Day of Event)
Time Commitment: August 22nd, 2009
Description: Assist United Way staff with event set-up (tables, flowers, displays, silent auction items, etc…). Help United Way direct auction winners, other events within programming day.

Position Title: Community Impact Committee
Time Commitment: (1 year – ongoing)
Description: Committee charged with oversight of Impact Area Investment Committees as well as responsible for allocation decisions for Crisis Intervention Investment. Performs Due Diligence reviews of current funded programs, where applicable. Recommends overall community investment to board, as well as participates on one of the Investment Committees (Financial Stability, Health/Wellness, Children/Youth Development).

Position Title: Health and Wellness Investment Committee (HWIC)
Time Commitment: 3 Years
Description: Responsible for achieving the intended impact of Health and Wellness through planning, making funding recommendations on, and evaluating programs and projects that contribute to achieving results for individuals and families. Activities include: application process review for multi-year and annual funding; participation in training to become familiar with United Way’s strategic focus and fund distribution process; regularly attend and participate in committee meetings and site visits; review program materials and presentations in advance of meetings and/or site visits; embrace diverse cultures and viewpoints; and, represent United Way’s perspective clearly and tactfully. Training in knowledge of business, financial practices and community need helpful.

Position Title: DDR Review Team
Time Commitment: Winter 2010 – 8 Hours Total

Description: Volunteers will be trained in CTK Software (1 HR) and attend a wrap up meeting to discuss results (1 HR).  The remaining 6 hours will be spent to review Due Diligence Reports on the CTK software.  This is a Virtual Volunteer position meaning reviews may be done at home, on your own time.  Make a difference to ensure we fund the best programs to make the greatest impact.

Position Title: Ready for School Volunteer
Time Commitment: July, 20th 2009
Description: Volunteers will assist trained staff during registration / check-in process for families and their children. Volunteers will help direct families to proper stations and ensure that transitions to different stations goes smoothly.

Position Title: Holiday Meal Volunteer
Time Commitment: 5 -6 hours (seasonal – Wednesday before Thanksgiving)
Description: Help serve traditional Thanksgiving dinner to community. Tasks include: welcome guests; check coats; serve at buffet line; runners; table staff.

Position Title: Newsletter and Mailing Support
Time Commitment: As Needed (Newsletters are quarterly: February, May, August, November)
Description: During large mailings, help is needed to place labels on the correct mailings.

Position Title: Gattas Scholarship Reviewer
Time Commitment:
March – approximately 10 hours
Description: The United Way George Gattas Scholarship is presented annually This scholarship was established in memory of George Gattas. As Athletic Director for Prospect High School, George Gattas touched the lives of many students. As a Director and Advisory Board member for the United Way of Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights, he worked to build a stronger community by improving the quality of life for residents in need. Reviewers read and rank the scholarship applicants and come to consensus regarding the top honoree and runners up.

Position Title: Celebration Luncheon Committee
Time Commitment: April- June
Description: Help make this annual event a memorable one for all who contributed their time, talent and treasure to United Way this past year.  Provide input and brainstorm for the content of the program and decoration for the event, which will highlight financial literacy and advocacy.  Assist with notification of award winners and inviting local dignitaries who will be presenting the prestigious Heart of the Community Award to deserving United Way partners.  On the day of the event, assist with greeting guests, check in, decorating and clean up.
FIRST MEETING: Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 7:30 AM at the NWSUW.

Position Title: LIVE UNITED Food Drive Committee
Time Commitment: March- September
Description: Coordinate the 2nd Annual LIVE UNITED Food Drive which occurs the week of September 21st.  Work with United Way community partners and local food banks to promote the event.  Assist in the logistics of moving the food donations from area wide businesses, schools and municipalities to the food pantries.  Solicit mayoral proclamations in the participating communities to publicize the week of September 21st as LIVE UNITED week.
FIRST MEETING: Wednesday, March 25th at 7:30 AM at the NWSUW.

Position Title: Workplace Campaign Appreciation Committee
Time Commitment: April
Description: Travel to companies who conducted United Way campaigns and distribute tokens of appreciation and invitations to the Celebration Luncheon to CEOs and Campaign Leaders who worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for United Way at their place of business!
FIRST MEETING: Tuesday, April 7th at 7:30 AM at the NWSUW

Position Title: Leadership Donor Acknowledgment Committee
Time Commitment: May- August
Description: This new committee will personally thank the leadership contribution of our donors by a hand-written note, phone call and/or a personal visit. Create opportunities to acknowledge our most vested donors- the Leadership Donor.  Assist in the design informational, networking and educational events to engage our leadership donors as well as potential donors who may consider giving at this level.
FIRST MEETING: Wednesday, May 6th at 7:30 AM at the NWSUW
